I learned this Pinoy recipe of shrimp by myself. My aunt used to cook this, but obviously she won’t tell me how she cooks it. I also never got a chance to watch her cook this because first of all, shrimp is quite expensive, and secondly she would cook this when I was at work. But it did not take me long to figure out how to cook this recipe. In fact, I can do this better than her. I experimented three times and then I got the perfect blend.

Sweet and Spicy Shrimp is basically just some shrimp cooked with something sweet and spicy. I would like for the shrimp to be unpeeled but Nunnie is too lazy to peel it that’s why I peeled it before cooking. I did some research online and discovered that other cooks use Sprite and others use some sugar. I prefer the orange soda because it has a very good effect. In fact, I tried this Pinoy recipe with Sprite. It still came out good, but the orange soda gave this recipe a perfect flavor.

This recipe is already good without the hot sauce. But I really do suggest adding some Sambal hot sauce. You don’t have to put a lot if you don’t like spicy food, but the Sambal hot sauce will give it a very nice flavor. I am not a fan of spicy food but I can’t cook this without the Sambal hot sauce.

When I first cook this sweet and spicy shrimp for Nunnie, it was a hit. He likes it a lot and in fact, he wants me to cook this over and over again if we have shrimp. He likes this better than shrimp tempura.

I believe this recipe is quite similar to the one that you can have at Dampa. I am not sure though because I have never been to Dampa. I wish I was able to visit that place before I left the Philippines.

What can I use in substitute to the Sambal Hot Sauce?

Hi Annica, you can substitute Sambal Hot Sauce with any other hot sauce that you prefer. I have tried using Tabasco sauce and it came out just as good.

I made this. It was really good. My hat’s off to you. I also added sweet yellow peppers (mostly for more color). That was really good. I used red pepper flakes instead of hot sauce, because of my kids. While this was good, I could tell something was missing. I’ll make it for myself with the hot sauce. I’m sure it will be excellent.

Hi Ferris, could it be the addition of sweet yellow peppers? I’m not sure though, I haven’t tried this recipe with yellow peppers. You really should try this with the sambal hot sauce, I’m telling you, it will make a difference :)

Hi, Thanks for sharing this link and recipe. But i need to know if you can also be more detailed with like the approximate mins as to when to and when not to add ingredients? I need it more detailed because i dont cook really on a daily basis, and this will be the first dish il cook ever. I just wanna be sure of what Im doing and that it will not be an epic fail :D

Hi Stan, thanks for visiting our site. As for your question about when to and when not to add ingredients, it was really hard for me to time it mainly because we don’t have to. For the shrimp, you’ll know it’s cooked when it turns orange. The other ingredients, you just kinda watch the consistency. I’m not even sure about that either. Maybe others can help?

three to four minutes with the shrimp at first before taking out of pan. Shrimp is better slightly under-cooked than over-cooked…and easier to fix!
